At Caracal Products & Services, we are elated to welcome Larry Gay Jr., our new Vice President and General Manager of Caracal Environmental Solutions. In this interview, Larry brings a unique perspective and dedication to our mission of driving impactful changes in the recycling industry. As we launch our innovative OR Recycling Program, Larry’s leadership promises to take Caracal Environmental Solutions to new heights.
Introduction to Larry Gay Jr.
Can you tell us a bit about your background and how your career led you to Caracal Environmental Solutions?
I was in industrial sales for 20 years and pivoted to recycling in 2008. I then sold my landfill free recycling company in 2014 to one of Caracal’s business associates. In 2019, they introduced me to Caracal’s CEO, Don Roberts, proposing a “Blue Wrap” recycling program. I thought it was genius. We have been working together on the program’s design, until we launched it in April 2024.
What inspired your passion for recycling and sustainability?
Necessity. As an industrial salesperson, I saw the trainloads of waste traveling from NY City to SC landfills several times every day. I wanted to find a way to make a difference. Recycling that minimizes landfill waste and reduces volume is essential.
Introduction to Caracal Environmental Solutions
What excites you most about leading the new Caracal Environmental Solutions program?
Opportunity in a new space with clients that are responsible but not held responsible. Healthcare in the US dumps 14,000,000 lbs [of waste] per day in landfills. That is an opportunity to make a major impact.
What makes Caracal Environmental Solutions stand out from other recycling programs in the industry?
Caracal is diverse with many products, services, and now recycling. As we join these together it delivers a platform that all healthcare systems can benefit from. Caracal operates with the agility of a small business, enabling us to accomplish things quickly and efficiently.
Introduction to the OR Recycling Program
Can you give us an overview of the new recycling program and how it works?
The program is simple for the Healthcare System. We perform initial audits, design the process flow for each surgical center, perform the training, implement necessary supplies, and launch the program. The only thing that the customer is responsible for is making sure the items are collected and placed in the correct bin and getting the recyclable bags to the holding area. Our special sauce all happens after we pick the material up and take it to one of our warehouses.
How will this program contribute to reducing landfill waste and promoting circular recycling?
With our program, each OR salvages at least 10 lbs per day of clean materials used in packaging sterile surgical sets in preparation for surgeries. Keep in mind this is all clean unsoiled non-hazardous wrap that was once going straight to the landfill. A system with 25 ORs will reduce landfill waste by 80,000 lbs annually. We can take this material and process it into recycled resin to make consumer goods as well as products back into the healthcare system.
The Importance of Recycling Programs
Why do you think recycling programs are critical to businesses and communities today?
Landfills produce methane (a greenhouse gas) and are one of the largest contributors to the problem of global warming. The US only recycles a low percentage of all that is recyclable. Healthcare could lead the way to changes in plastic materials recovery, recyclability, and circularity.
What message would you like to share with individuals and organizations considering implementing or supporting recycling initiatives?
Reducing Waste in Landfills
- Minimizing environmental impact: Hospitals and clinics produce large amounts of waste, including single-use plastics, paper, and packaging materials. Recycling these reduces the burden on landfills.
Conserving Resources
- Reclaiming valuable materials: Recycling medical wrap and packaging can recover valuable materials such as polypropylene and polyethylene, reducing the need for virgin resources.
- Energy savings: Recycling uses less energy than manufacturing new products from raw materials, helping to conserve natural resources.
Creating Job Opportunities
- Local recycling initiatives create jobs in waste management, transportation, and materials processing, boosting the community’s economy. Our recycling program is driving job creation by adding roles in waste management, transportation, and materials processing to support the growing number of hospitals and surgical centers we serve. As we expand partnerships with major healthcare systems across the country, we’re contributing to both local employment and a more sustainable future.
Enhancing Public Health
- Reducing pollution: Recycling reduces the use of natural resources and decreases pollution associated with creating virgin resins.
Educating and Engaging the Community
- Raising awareness: Recycling programs can educate the public about sustainability and responsible consumption. Encouraging participation: Community members involved in recycling programs feel empowered to contribute to environmental stewardship.
Personal Reflections
What has been the most rewarding part of your journey in the recycling industry so far?
People. I have met and become friends with many people in the recycling industry. I have also been fortunate enough to become long-term friends with the clients we serve.
What advice would you give to the next generation of professionals passionate about sustainability?
Stop seeking excuses, start creating solutions—recycle for a better tomorrow! Where there is a will there is a way. In recycling, you are not searching for customers to sell to… you are securing the supply while saving the planet. We do not need to stop using plastics, we need to just handle them responsibly.
As we embark on this journey, Larry’s message is clear: it is time for individuals and organizations to take responsibility for their waste and embrace sustainable practices. Recycling is not just an environmental necessity; it is an opportunity to conserve resources, reduce pollution, and create meaningful change. Larry’s optimism and determination inspire us to believe that where there is a will, there’s a way—and at Caracal Environmental Solutions, that way is recycling for a better tomorrow.
Stay tuned for more updates on our initiatives and join us in supporting a greener, more sustainable future.
