By the Caracal Products & Services ESG Committee
One of the earliest questions our ESG Committee faced was how to approach our carbon footprint inventory. We knew it was an important step—but like many organizations at the beginning of their ESG journey, we also knew our resources were limited. So, we made a practical decision: we partnered with an external company to help us complete our first greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory.
That first year was invaluable. We interviewed several providers, asked a lot of questions, and ultimately selected a company we were confident in. Working with an external expert gave us structure, credibility, and a solid baseline. Most importantly, it helped us get started instead of getting stuck trying to be perfect.
But something interesting happened along the way. As we reviewed the data, asked follow-up questions, and learned how the inventory was built, our own understanding grew. We began to see how emissions data connects directly to everyday business decisions—from energy use to transportation to operational efficiency. By the end of that first year, we realized we were ready for the next step.
With more internal resources and a stronger knowledge base, we made a deliberate choice to bring the carbon footprint inventory in-house. Doing the work ourselves has deepened our understanding of Caracal’s operations in a way no external report ever could. It’s created stronger teamwork across departments, encouraged shared ownership, and helped build a culture where sustainability is part of how we think—not just something we outsource.
This hands-on approach has also strengthened our conversations with customers and suppliers. When we talk about emissions, reductions, or data quality, we do so with confidence and clarity because we truly understand our numbers and our story.
Our takeaway is simple: there’s no single “right” way to start. Beginning with external support helped us build momentum. Taking ownership later helped us build mastery. Both steps were essential—and together, they’ve moved us closer to the sustainable future we’re working toward.
As we reflect on this journey in recognition of Earth Day, we’re reminded that progress doesn’t come from one perfect decision or a single report. It comes from showing up, learning, and taking responsibility—step by step. Measuring our carbon footprint isn’t just about numbers on a page; it’s about understanding our impact and using that knowledge to make better choices for our business, our partners, and the planet.
Earth Day challenges all of us to think beyond today and consider the legacy we’re building. By investing in our own understanding and embedding sustainability into our culture, we’re not just tracking emissions—we’re creating a foundation for long-term accountability, meaningful collaboration, and positive change. That’s a commitment we’re proud to carry forward, on Earth Day and every day.
